    What happens when you overeat?

Overeating can happen in many ways. Sometimes people overeat as they are too happy or too sad. The other times it's because of the habit that people tend to overeat.

The increased blood flow to your intestines means less blood for your other bodily functions, including your brain. When you overload on food, you can¡¯t tell your body, ¡°Oh, it¡¯s just this one time.¡± Your body reacts to the excess food automatically, working fast and prepares for more, which ultimately puts all your systems on alert. Your pancreas, for example, pumps out insulin to remove the excess sugar from your blood.

It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to send a signal to the stomach to let you know that you¡¯re full. Overeating occurs when you continue to eat beyond this point of fullness,

Overeating happens when a person continues to eat beyond the feeling of fullness. Do you know if you overeat, your stomach may expand beyond its normal capacity? Yes, it¡¯s true. This is to adjust to the large amount of food consumed by you. The expanded stomach tends to push against other organs and makes you feel uncomfortable. This can make you feel tired, sluggish, or drowsy. You may feel bloated and extremely uncomfortable.

Research shows that overeating, even in the short-term, can cause insulin resistance. This in turn keeps blood sugar levels high and over time can lead to conditions like obesity and type 2 diabetes. A 2017 study found that one day of binge eating led to impaired blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity in young, healthy adults.

Eating too much over time can also lead to leptin resistance. Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells that tells the brain you are full. The more body fat someone has, the more leptin they will have. However, in leptin resistance, the brain doesn't receive the signal from leptin to stop eating. Therefore, appetite remains high leading to a vicious cycle of continuing to overeat, which can lead to more fat gain. Overeating can also raise triglyceride levels, especially if you consume too many high sugar foods or drink too much alcohol.

Too many calories can cause memory loss and decline mental faculties. Overeating can disrupt the production of uroguanylin, a hormone that helps transmit signals of fullness to the brain.
