Up 

오늘은 쉬운 편인 구동사들이 나옵니다.

즉, 많이 본 것들이 있어서 상대적으로 쉽게 여겨질 것 같습니다.

오늘 UP 이야기 2부이자, up & down 3탄을 연재하도록 하겠습니다.

1. 상승과 증가를 나타내는 UP

Up 은 기분, 힘, 원기 등의 심리적 상승이나,

어떤 물체가 수면이나 지면 위로 올라오는 등의 물리적인 상승, 증가를 나타낸다.

⑴ build up - : ~을 쌓아올리다; ~을 확립하다; ~을 강화하다.

They built up an antipollution movement. ＊antipollution은 반공해운동

⑵ take up : (시간, 공간 등)을 차지하다; 일에 착수하다, 시작하다(start, commence, begin)

I decided to take up exercising.

⑶ Pile up : 쌓이다; ~을 쌓다, 쌓아올리다. (= accumulate, gather, collect)

Unfortunately, evidence was pilling up against the defendant.

They are piling up the red bricks neatly.

⑷ pick up - : ~을 집어 올리다, 줍다; ~을 차에 태우다.

She picks her son up from school at 5.

He picked his cap up from the floor.

⑸ blow up - : ~을 일으키다; ~을 폭발시키다. (=explode, set off)

Strong winds can blow up big storms of red dust which make the sky look pink.

They used explosives to blow up the abandoned building.

⑹ set up - : ~을 세우다; ~을 설치하다; ~을 시작하다; ~을 정하다 (=establish; launch)

You can set up a filing system that works for you.

He set up a company to produce robots.

⑺ cheer up -: 힘을 내다, 기운을 회복하다

It is time for the unemployed to cheer up.

⑻ speed up : 속도를 높이다, 가속하다

Changes were speeded up after the Sunday’s riot.

2. 유지, 지속의 up 은 어떤 상태나 동작의 변화 없는 유지, 지속을 나타내고,

    Up은 ‘따라잡아, 뒤쫓아’ 의 뜻도 가집니다.

⑴ put up with : ~을 참다; 견디다 = endure, stand, bear, tolerate

I can’t put up with his rude behavior.

⑵ keep up (with)- : (계속)~하다, ~을 유지하다

Don’t walk so fast. She can’t keep up with you.

⑶ Keep up with - : ~에 뒤지지 않다.

He struggled to keep up with the other students.

⑷ bring up - : ~를 기르다, 양육하다; (문제를) 제기하다

His grandmother brought him up.

She brought up a new matter at the meeting.

⑸ catch up with : ~을 따라잡다(= get closer to, approach),  만회하다(=recover, make up for)

I practiced and practiced, trying to catch up with the other girls.

I like to catch up to the leader both in race and in studying.

⑹ back up - : ~을 후원하다; ~을 입증하다; (저장을 위해) ~을 백업하다

The rest of the staff backed her up when she complained about working conditions.

＊back에는 후원하다의 뜻도 있다.

⑺ stay up : (자지 않고) 깨어 있다.

I stayed up all night watching movies.

＊stay는 ‘머무르다’이고 up 은 일어나 이므로 일어난 상태로 있다 가 그 어원이다.

⑻ line up : ~을 정렬하다; 줄을 서다

The scientist discovered that the Pyramids in Egypt are lined up precisely with some stars.

⑼ draw up-: (길가로 가서)멈추다, 세우다

I waved my hands and he drew up his car alongside the porch.

＊ throw up 은 토하다(=vomit)의 뜻으로 위로라는 것에 들어가야 하지만
