Valentine's Day is just around the corner! In most parts of the world, 14 February is celebrated as the day of love. On this day, people indulge in gifting, a custom that helped make Valentine's Day the commercial holiday. 

 Let's take a look at some of the unique Valentine's Day customs from around the world.

South Korea

For Valentine’s Day, women gift their men with chocolate; the men respond in kind a month later on White Day. But singles are also given their day on April 14. This is known as Black Day, when uncoupled folks brood over (or celebrate?) their single status with a bowl of "jajangmyeon," noodles in a black bean sauce.

발렌타인데이에는 여성이 남성에게 초콜릿을 선물합니다. 남성은 한 달 후 화이트데이에 현물로 답례를 합니다. 하지만 4월 14일에는 싱글을 위한 날도 있습니다. 블랙데이는 커플이 아닌 사람들이 검은 콩 소스에 면을 넣은 "자장면" 한 그릇으로 그들의 싱글 상태를 축하?하는 날로 알려져 있습니다.

 

 

 

Japan

In Japan, women present men with chocolates and flowers on Feb. 14. Husbands, boyfriends or prospective partners get high-end honmei choco ("true feeling") chocolates, while acquaintances and coworkers receive simpler giri choco ("obligation chocolates").

일본에서는 2월 14일에 여성이 남성에게 초콜릿과 꽃을 선물합니다. 남편, 남자친구 또는 장래의 파트너는 고급 혼메이 초코 ("진정한 느낌") 초콜릿을, 지인과 직장 동료는 보다 단순한 기리 초코 ("의무 초콜릿")을 선물합니다.

 

 

 

Taiwan

Taiwan celebrates Valentine’s Day on February 14 (as well as another similar holiday on July 1st ). Just as in Western countries, girlfriends expect to receive flowers. 

However, in Taiwan, the color and number of flowers in the bouquet often carry a secret message. Red roses mean “you’re my one and only.” Ninety-nine roses mean “I will love you forever.” One hundred and eight roses mean “will you marry me?” 

대만은 2월 14일에 발렌타인 데이를 기념합니다(7월 1일에도 비슷한 기념일이 있습니다). 서구 국가와 마찬가지로 여자친구는 꽃을 받기를 기대합니다. 

하지만 대만에서는 꽃다발의 색깔과 꽃의 개수에 비밀스러운 메시지가 담겨 있는 경우가 많습니다. 빨간 장미는 "당신은 나의 유일한 사람"이라는 뜻입니다. 아흔아홉 송이의 장미는 "당신을 영원히 사랑합니다"라는 뜻입니다. 백팔송이 장미는 "나와 결혼해줄래요?"라는 뜻입니다.  

 

 

 

England

While there are many ways to spend Valentine's Day in England, listening to adorable children sing is one of the most popular. Little singers are rewarded with sweets, fruit or money. To celebrate a plentiful harvest, some people even exchange Valentine's buns, often called 'plum shuttles', which are made with raisins, plums or caraway seeds.

영국에서 발렌타인 데이를 보내는 방법은 여러 가지가 있지만 , 가장 인기 있는 것 중 하나는 사랑스러운 아이들의 노래를 듣는 것입니다. 노래를 부르는 아이에게는 과자, 과일 또는 돈을 선물로 주기도 합니다.  풍성한 수확을 축하하기 위해 건포도, 자두 또는 캐러웨이 씨앗으로 만든 'plum shuttles'이라고 불리는 발렌타인 빵을 교환하기도 합니다.

 

 

 

Philippines

The celebration of 14 February in Phillipines sees thousands of couples celebrate their wedding anniversary. Recent years have also witnessed “mass weddings" on 14 February Valentine's Day. In the Philippines, Valentine’s Day is the time when many young couples marry in an event sponsored by the government as a form of public service.

필리핀에서는 2월 14일을 기념하여 수천 쌍의 커플이 결혼 기념일을 축하하는 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 최근에는 2월 14일 발렌타인데이에 '대규모 결혼식'이 열리기도 합니다. 필리핀에서는 발렌타인데이를 맞아 많은 젊은 커플들이 정부가 후원하는 공익행사로 결혼하는 날입니다. 

 

 

 

Ghana

In Ghana, Feb 14 is celebrated as the “National Chocolate Day.” It is a step that the Ghana government took in 2007 to increase tourism in the country. Ghana is among the largest cocoa-producing countries in the world. On Feb 14, one can attend performances, music events, and restaurants that have themed menus for the special day.

가나에서는 2월 14일을 '국가 초콜릿의 날'로 기념하고 있습니다. 이는 가나 정부가 가나의 관광산업을 활성화하기 위해 2007년에 취한 조치입니다. 가나는 세계에서 가장 큰 코코아 생산국 중 하나입니다. 2월 14일에는 특별한 날을 기념하는 공연, 음악 행사, 테마 메뉴가 있는 레스토랑을 찾아갈 수 있습니다.

Grilled pork belly (samgyeopsal) (삼겹살)  Pork belly, which is beneath the sirloin, is fatty and tender and is one of the favorite pork cuts among Koreans. Grill pork belly on a hot grill plate and eat the meat with red chili and soybean paste or sesame oil with salt. You can wrap grilled pork belly in lettuce or enjoy the meat with garlic. 등심 아래에 있는 삼겹살은 기름기가 많고 부드러워 한국인이 가장 좋아하는 돼지고기 부위 중 하나입니다. 뜨거운 철판에 삼겹살을 굽고 쌈장 또는 참기름 소금장에 찍어 고기를 먹습니다. 구운 삼겹살을 상추에 싸먹거나 마늘과 함께 고기를 즐길 수 있습니다.   If its advent had to do with the expanding economy, urbanization and export industry in the 70s, it was during the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis — colloquially dubbed the “IMF Crisis” — that pork belly became the epitome of South Korean barbecue. Due to its affordability, families and companies dined out at pork belly joints instead of beef barbecue restaurants.
