영어 신조어 슬랭

말은 시대와 함께 변해갑니다. 같은 말이라도 시간이 흐르면서 다른 의미로 사용되거나, 조금 전까지 사용되고 있던 말이 없어지고, 새로운 말도 생깁니다.

이번에는 영어 신조어, 속어, 새로 생긴 단어등을 살펴보겠습니다. 새로운 단어는 영영 사전에 추가되지 않은 것도 있습니다. 알고 있으면 해외의 SNS나 블로그를 볼 때 편리합니다.

nomophobia

: The Fear of Being Without Your Phone

no (없음) + mobile (휴대용) + phobia (공포증)를 합성 한 단어. 

휴대폰이 없는 상태에 대한 두려움

tech neck

PC나 휴대폰 등의 전자 기기를 장시간 내려다 본 결과 생기는 목의 통증

share(공유)와 parent(부모)가 합성된 단어. 아이의 사진이나 동영상을 SNS로 자주 공유하는 부모

copypasta

넷상에서 카피 & 페이스트(copy and paste)된 데이터나 텍스트를 영어로 카피 파스타라고 부르고, 기사·동영상을 투고하는 것은 post copypasta라고 표현됩니다. Twitter와 Reddit에서 자주 사용되는 단어입니다.

stan

stalker(스토커)와 fan(팬)을 조합한 단어로 인기 유명인의 열광적인 팬을 의미하며 동사로도 사용됩니다.

phubbing

함께 있는 사람을 무시하고 휴대전화에 집중하는 행위. 동사는 phub. 

::the act of ignoring someone you are with and giving attention to your mobile phone instead:

Phubbing은 Phone(전화)과 snubbing(냉대)의 합성어로, 스마트폰에 빠져 타인을 신경쓰지 않은 사람을 뜻하는 신조어이며, 영어권에서는 스몸비로도 불립니다.

스마트폰에 정신이 팔린 채 걷는 모습이 마치 좀비 같다고 해서 

스몸비(smombie=Smartphone+Zombie)라고 부릅니다

JOMO

 ‘Joy of Missing Out(잊히는 것의 즐거움)’을 줄인 말로, SNS과 애플리케이션(앱)을 삭제하며 온라인 관계를 단절하는 사람을 뜻합니다.

:: a feeling of contentment with one’s own pursuits and activities, without worrying over the possibility of missing out on what others may be doing:

트렌드나 화제, 정보를 놓치는 공포를 나타내는 FOMO(fear of missing out 잊히는 것의 두려움)와는 대조적으로, 자신을 위한 개인적인 시간을 우선시하며 즐기는 기쁨을 나타내고 있습니다.

nepo baby

네포티즘(nepotism)과 아기(baby)의 합성어로 미국판 '금수저' 아이를 가리킵니다.

*nepotism- 자신의 권력과 영향력을 사용하여 가족을 위해 좋은 일이나 관직을 주는 행위

nepo baby는

부모의 후광으로 노출되어 성공한 유명인을 가리킵니다.

:: A nepo baby, short for nepotism baby, is the child of an actor, musician, producer or other industry insider who has likely benefitted from their parents’ fame or connections while launching their own career.

goblin mode

게임에서 유래한 말로 고블린처럼 타인의 눈을 신경쓰는 행동을 하지 않고 좋아하는 일을 하거나 먹거나 하는 행동. 

SNS의 깔끔하고 멋부리는 게시물과는 반대로, 원하는대로 행동하는 것을 가리킵니다.

hard pass

어떤 제안이나 요청등에 거절할 때, 확실히 아니오.라고 말하는 것. 예의를 덜 차려도 되는 상황에서 쓰기 적절한 표현입니다.

sus

suspicious(수상한, 의심스러운)의 약어로, “He’s acting sus today.”(그는 오늘 뭔가 이상하다)와 같은 형태로 사용하는 말입니다.  Among Us에서 생겨난 유행어로 특히 온라인 게임에서 범인이나 적이 아닐까 하는 상대에게 "수상하다"라는 의미에서 사용되고 있습니다.

bussin’

너무 좋다, 너무 맛있다.

If you spend any amount of time on social media, you might have heard someone describe something as “bussin’.” Maybe it was, “That’s bussin’!” or “Totally bussin’.

Use “bussin’” to describe anything great, like a party, an activity, or delicious food.

:: especially : DELICIOUS, TASTY

“Bussin’” means something is really good-for instance, “That taco was bussin’!”
