The collapse of Ukraine's Nova Kakhovka dam
The Nova Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine suffered a collapse early Tuesday, June 6, forcing more than 1,400 people to flee their homes and threatening vital water supplies as flooding inundated the region.
It is not yet clear whether the dam was deliberately attacked or whether the breach was the result of structural failure.

The Nova Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro, located about 30km (20 miles) east of Kherson city, stood at 30 metres (98 feet) and 3.2km (2 miles) wide.
It provided water to large parts of southeastern Ukraine in addition to the Crimean Peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.
The dam’s reservoir also supplied water to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) to cool its six nuclear reactors.
댐의 저수지는 또한 ZNPP(Zaporizhzhia 원자력 발전소)에 물을 공급하여 6개의 원자로를 냉각시켰습니다.
The dramatic rupture of the Kakhovka dam that upheld Ukraine’s largest reservoir began releasing a torrent of water a day earlier in areas where tens of thousands of people live along the Dnieper River.
Around 6,000 individuals have been evacuated from areas of the Dnieper River flooded due to the Kakhovka dam's destruction, Russian and Ukrainian authorities have said.

The deluge of water released from the dam has sparked fears of widespread flooding, as local residents are being urged to evacuate the area immediately. About 42,000 people are at risk from flooding around the area.
Ukraine’s vast agricultural heartland, which is partially fed by the Dnieper river, is crucial to worldwide supplies of grain, sunflower oil and other foodstuffs. Global wheat and corn prices rose Tuesday on concerns that production might be disrupted.
The dam — one of the world’s biggest in terms of reservoir capacity — retained a volume of water nearly equivalent to that of the Great Salt Lake in the United States.
Ukrainian Environment Minister Ruslan Strilets said at least 150 metric tons of oil from the dam have leaked into the Dnipro and the environmental damage had been estimated at 50 million euros ($53.8 million), according to Reuters.
Ruslan Strilets
