의문대명사 (학습자료)

1. 의문대명사란?

의문대명사는 문장에서 누군가, 무언가, 어느 것을 모를 때, 그 알 수 없는 명사를 대신하여 질문을 만드는 의문사 종류 중 하나입니다.

보통 의문문(질문문)의 문두에 위치하여 정보를 요청할 때 사용됩니다.

예를 들어,

“누가 꽃을 보냈지?”라는 질문에서 ‘누가’에 해당하는 것이 바로 의문대명사 who입니다.

2. 주요 의문대명사 종류

Who → 누구 (사람, 주어)

Whom → 누구를 (사람, 목적어)

Whose → 누구의 (사람의 소유)

What → 무엇 (사물, 개념)

Which → 어떤 것 (선택지 중에서)

이들은 모두 불특정하고 알 수 없는 대상을 대신합니다.

3. 복합 의문대명사 (Compound Interrogative Pronouns)

Whoever → 누구든지

Whomever → 누구를 ~하든지

Whatever → 무엇이든지

Whichever → 어느 것이든지

이 단어들은 기본 의문대명사에 -ever를 붙인 형태로, 말하는 사람이 대상이 완전히 미지임을 강조할 때 사용합니다.

Take whichever seat you want.

(어느 자리든 원하는 곳에 앉으세요.)

I’ll accept whatever you decide.

(당신이 결정하는 것이면 무엇이든 받아들일게요.)

4. 의문대명사의 용도와 사용법

① Who (주어로서 사람을 대신)

누군가가 행동의 주체일 때 사용합니다.

동사는 단수/복수 여부에 따라 변형합니다.

Who made this cake?

(누가 이 케이크를 만들었나요?)

→ 주어가 unknown person이고, 동사 made는 과거형

② Whom (목적어로서 사람을 대신)

격식을 차릴 때 주로 사용되며, 회화에서는 who로 대체되기도 합니다.

전치사 뒤에 사용되거나 목적어 자리에 옴.

Whom did you invite to the dinner?

(너는 저녁 식사에 누구를 초대했니?)

To whom should I send the document?

(내가 이 서류를 누구에게 보내야 하나요?)

→ 회화에서는: Who did you invite? / Who should I send this to?

③ Whose (소유격: 누구의)

Whose는 소유자를 묻는 표현입니다.

명사 앞에 오면 형용사 역할도 할 수 있습니다.

Whose umbrella is this?

(이건 누구 우산이야?)

Whose was the best performance?

(누구의 무대가 가장 좋았어?)

→ “Whose performance was best?”는 형용사 역할

④ What (사물이나 개념을 대신)

What은 사람이 아닌 사물이나 개념에 대해 묻습니다.

선택지가 특별히 정해져 있지 않은 경우 사용합니다.

What is your favorite food?

(네가 제일 좋아하는 음식은 뭐야?)

What happened here?

(여기서 무슨 일이 있었던 거야?)

⑤ Which (선택지 중에서 하나를 고를 때)

Which는 여러 선택지 중 하나를 고를 때 사용합니다.

선택지가 명확하거나, 정해져 있는 상황에서 씁니다.

Which do you like better, chocolate or vanilla?

(초콜릿이 좋아? 바닐라가 좋아?)

Which of these bags is yours?

(이 가방들 중에서 네 것은 어느 거야?)

5. 주의해야 할 혼동 요소

Who vs. Whom

Who는 주어 → 행동을 하는 사람

Whom은 목적어 → 행동을 당하는 사람

Who helped you? (누가 너를 도와줬니?)

You helped whom? (너는 누구를 도와줬니?)

→ 회화에서는 Whom 대신 Who도 널리 사용됨

Whose vs. Who’s

Whose: 누구의 (소유)

Who’s: Who is 또는 Who has의 축약형

Whose phone is this? (이건 누구 핸드폰이야?)

Who’s coming to the meeting? (= Who is coming?)

6. 의문대명사와 다른 의문사와의 차이

---의문대명사는 명사를 대신함 (what, who 등)

---의문부사는 장소, 시간, 이유 등을 질문함 (when, where, why, how)

Where do you live? → 장소

Why are you crying? → 이유

How did you do that? → 방법

→ 이들은 interrogative adverbs라고 부릅니다.

7. 의문대명사의 문법상 특징

의문대명사는 단수형/복수형 변화 없이 사용됨

하지만 동사와의 수 일치(subject-verb agreement)는 필요함

Who wants to join? (단수: 한 명이 원함)

Who want to join? (복수: 여러 명이 원함 → Who가 복수일 때)
