◆ 부정대명사의 기본 개념과 other 계열의 역할
먼저 부정대명사가 뭘까요?
부정대명사(indefinite pronoun)는 특정한 사람이나 사물이 아닌, 막연하거나 정해지지 않은 대상을 가리키는 대명사예요.
그 중에서도 other, another, the other는
‘다른 것, 또 하나, 나머지 하나’처럼 대상의 구분이나 위치를 표현하는 데 핵심적인 역할을 합니다.
간단하게 개념만 먼저 잡아볼게요.
other: 다른 (불특정 다수)
another: 또 다른 하나 (추가의 의미)
the other: 나머지 하나 (정해진 것 중의 남은 하나)
이제 각각을 자세히 살펴볼게요.
◆ other: 정해지지 않은 ‘나머지들’을 말할 때
other는 보통 정해지지 않은 여러 개 중 ‘다른 것들’을 말할 때 사용합니다.
예문을 볼게요:
Some people like coffee. Other people prefer tea.
(어떤 사람들은 커피를 좋아하고, 다른 사람들은 차를 선호한다.)
여기서 ‘other people’은 특정한 사람이 아니라, 앞에서 언급된 사람들과는 다른 그룹이죠.
또 하나, other는 형용사와 대명사 역할 모두 가능해요.
I don’t like this color. Do you have any other options?
(이 색은 마음에 안 들어요. 다른 옵션 있어요?) → 형용사
Some of the books are here. Others are on the shelf.
(책 일부는 여기에 있어요. 나머지 책들은 선반에 있어요.) → 대명사

◆ another: 또 하나, 추가적인 대상 표현하기

예를 들어,
I’ll have another cup of coffee.
(커피 한 잔 더 주세요.)
여기서 'another'는 an + other의 결합으로, 단수 명사와만 어울린다는 걸 알 수 있어요.
하나를 추가하거나 다른 하나를 제안할 때 자주 쓰입니다.

He moved to another city.
(그는 다른 도시로 이사했어요.)

◆ the other: 나머지 하나, 특정 대상 강조하기
이번엔 the other, 헷갈리는 분들 많죠?
the other는 이미 정해진 대상 중에서 남은 하나를 말할 때 써요.
예문을 볼게요:
I have two pens. One is blue, the other is black.
(나는 펜 두 자루가 있어. 하나는 파란색이고, 다른 하나는 검은색이야.)
또는
One student passed, but the other failed.
(한 학생은 합격했고, 다른 학생은 떨어졌어요.)
여기서 'the other'는 딱 둘 중 남은 하나를 말합니다.
그런데! 만약 남은 게 두 개 이상이라면 어떻게 할까요?
I have five books. Two are here. The others are in my bag.
(책 다섯 권 중 두 권은 여기 있고, 나머지는 가방에 있어요.)
핵심 포인트 정리:

-the others: 남은 여러 개
-대상이 특정되어 있을 때만 사용 (이미 언급됐거나 한정된 상황)
