How Much & How Many
영어에서는 양(How much) 과 수(How many) 를 표현할 때, 단순히 some이나 a lot 만 쓰면 말이 단조롭게 들릴 수 있어요. 자주 쓰는 자연스러운 표현들을 배우면 영어가 훨씬 풍부해집니다.
1. (일상적인 소량·다량 표현)
◆ A couple of – 두 개 정도
I need a couple of pens for my notes.
노트 필기를 위해 펜 두 개 정도가 필요해요.
◆ A few – 몇 개 (3~4개 정도)
She asked me a few simple questions.
그녀는 나에게 몇 가지 간단한 질문을 했어요.
◆ Several – 여러 개 (보통 3~7 정도)
Several students joined the new club.
여러 명의 학생이 새로운 동아리에 가입했어요.
◆ A bunch of – 꽤 많은 (비격식)
We brought a bunch of flowers to the party.
우리는 파티에 꽃을 많이 가져왔어요.
◆ A handful of – 소수의
Only a handful of kids were playing outside.
밖에서 노는 아이들은 몇 명 안 됐어요.
2. (자연스럽게 수 추측하기)
◆ Around / About – 대략
The library has about 5,000 books.
도서관에는 대략 5천 권의 책이 있어요.
◆ Roughly / Approximately – 대략적으로 (조금 더 격식 있음)
The trip will take roughly two hours.
여행은 대략 두 시간이 걸릴 거예요.
◆ -ish – 대충, ~쯤 (비격식)
Let’s meet at 8-ish tonight.
오늘 밤 8시쯤 만나자.
◆ Or so – 그 정도
We need three kilos or so of rice.
쌀이 세 킬로 정도 필요해요.
3. (정확한 수 표현)
◆ A dozen – 정확히 12개
He bought a dozen oranges from the market.
그는 시장에서 오렌지 12개를 샀어요.
◆ Half a dozen – 정확히 6개
We ordered half a dozen donuts.
우리는 도넛 여섯 개를 주문했어요.
◆ A pair of – 한 쌍, 두 개 (짝으로 쓰는 것)
I need a pair of socks for gym class.
체육 시간에 신을 양말 한 켤레가 필요해요.
4. (전체 중 일부 표현하기)
◆ The majority of – 대다수
The majority of the class voted for the trip.
학급 대다수가 소풍을 찬성했어요.
◆ Most of – 대부분
Most of my time is spent studying.
내 시간 대부분은 공부하는 데 쓰여요.
◆ The bulk of – 가장 큰 부분
The bulk of the budget goes to salaries.
예산의 대부분이 급여로 사용돼요.
◆ A portion of – 일부
A portion of the money will support local schools.
돈의 일부는 지역 학교를 지원할 거예요.
◆ A fraction of – 극히 일부
We only completed a fraction of the project.
우리는 프로젝트의 극히 일부만 완료했어요.
5. (과장된 표현)
◆ A million – 엄청 많음 (비유적)
I have a million ideas for this project.
이 프로젝트에 아이디어가 엄청 많아요.
◆ Loads of / Tons of – 아주 많은 (비격식)
There are loads of new movies this month.
이번 달에는 새 영화가 아주 많아요.
◆ A gazillion – 엄청나게 많은 (장난스러운 표현)
She has a gazillion photos on her phone.
그녀의 휴대폰에는 사진이 엄청 많아요.
◆ A smattering – 소량
Only a smattering of fans came to the game.
경기에는 팬들이 소수만 왔어요.

1. A couple of / A few
A: Do you have any pens?
B: Yes, I have a couple of extra ones.
A: Great, I only need a few for class.
A: 펜 좀 있어?
B: 응, 여분이 두 개 정도 있어.
A: 좋아, 난 수업에 몇 개만 필요해.
2. Several / A bunch of
A: How many people came to the meeting?
B: Several members showed up.
A: Oh, I thought a bunch of people would join.
A: 회의에 몇 명이나 왔어?
B: 몇 명이 참석했어.
A: 아, 나는 사람들이 많이 올 줄 알았는데.
3. A handful of
A: Were there many kids at the park?
B: No, just a handful of them.
A: That’s surprising on such a sunny day.
A: 공원에 아이들이 많았어?
B: 아니, 몇 명밖에 없었어.
A: 이렇게 화창한 날인데 의외네.
4. About / Or so
A: How long is the bus ride?
B: It takes about 30 minutes or so.
A: Perfect, that’s not too long.
A: 버스 타면 얼마나 걸려?
B: 30분 정도 걸려.
A: 딱 좋네, 그렇게 길진 않네.
5. A dozen / Half a dozen
A: How many eggs should I buy?
B: A dozen will be enough.
A: Okay, I was thinking maybe half a dozen.
A: 달걀 몇 개 사면 될까?
B: 12개면 충분해.
A: 알았어, 난 6개 정도 생각했는데.
6. The majority / A portion
A: How much of the report did you finish?
B: The majority of it is done, but a portion still needs work.
A: That’s good progress.
A: 보고서 얼마나 끝냈어?
B: 대부분은 끝냈는데, 일부는 아직 해야 해.
A: 잘 진행되고 있네.
7. Loads of / A smattering
A: How many messages did you get today?
B: Loads of them! I couldn’t even check all.
A: I only got a smattering of messages.
A: 오늘 메시지 몇 개 받았어?
B: 엄청 많이! 다 확인도 못 했어.
A: 난 몇 개밖에 못 받았는데.

1. Supermarket (슈퍼마켓에서)
Clerk: How many apples would you like?
Customer: Just a couple of apples, please.

2. Café (카페에서)
Barista: How much sugar do you want in your coffee?
Customer: Just a handful of sugar packets, not too many.
Barista: Got it. And how many muffins?
Customer: A pair of muffins, please.
바리스타: 커피에 설탕 얼마나 넣어드릴까요?
손님: 설탕 몇 봉지만 주세요, 너무 많이는 말고요.

3. At the Bus Stop (버스 정류장에서)
Friend A: How long does it take to get to the city center?
Friend B: Around 40 minutes or so.
Friend A: That’s fine. How many stops are there?
Friend B: Several stops before we arrive.
A: 시내까지 가는 데 얼마나 걸려?
B: 대략 40분 정도 걸려.
A: 괜찮네. 정류장은 몇 개 있어?
B: 도착하기 전에 여러 개 있어.
4. At School (학교에서)
Teacher: How many questions are left on the test?
Student: Only a few more, maybe three.
Teacher: Good. How much time do you need?
Student: About 10 minutes-ish.
선생님: 시험에 몇 문제 남았니?
학생: 몇 개 안 남았어요, 세 개 정도요.
선생님: 좋아. 시간은 얼마나 필요하니?
학생: 10분 정도면 돼요.
5. Party Planning (파티 준비)
Friend A: How many people are coming tonight?
Friend B: Loads of people! Probably around 30.
Friend A: Wow, that’s a lot. How much food do we need?
Friend B: The bulk of the snacks is ready, but we still need a portion of drinks.
A: 오늘 밤 몇 명이나 와?
B: 엄청 많이 와! 아마 30명쯤 될 거야.
